The Dutch couple Maria Melis and her husband Ed Koopman founded the Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire in 1993. The donkey sanctuary is the home for sick, injured and orphaned donkeys.
Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire is committed to offer all donkeys of Bonaire a protected life. Information about the donkeys' world is also given to the islanders, in schools and to tourists. Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire currently houses more than 700 donkeys. They are provided with food, drinking water and medical care and have plenty of space and freedom to walk around.
Together with your guide you will drive through the sanctuary and there will be guaranteed interaction with the donkeys. The donkeys will regularly come up to your car and try to stick their noses through the window! Before you enter the reserve, you can buy some carrots at the Sanctuary. You are guaranteed to make friends with them.
After the drive through the reserve, you will visit the Special Care Unit. A special place where injured and distressed donkeys receive all the medical care they need. After the tour you can have a drink on the terrace of the Sanctuary.
Please note: the entrance fee for the sanctuary is not included in this tour. You can buy these tickets at the entrance of the sanctuary for 9 USD per adult and 4.50 USD per child up to 12 years old
